Hi, I'm Carolyn
Welcome! Because you are here, I assume you have a spark of curiosity about Yoga. And, because you are looking into studying on-line, I assume you like to learn and want to meet your goals. If you are also working full time or parenting or going to school or cultivating relationships or making ends meet or working on projects or enjoying hobbies or taking care of other people or doing your best to not get overwhelmed or going to the beach (like we tend to do here on Martha's Vineyard) or all of the above, this course is for you!
My courses are short and safe. The practices are emphisized, with just enough theory to give you context.
I have been practicing and teaching Yoga for 45 years, I have a Master's Degree in East West Psychology; I'm an Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist and I have a license in Addiction Counseling (LADC1). I am a Certified Trauma Professional and I know how to communicate without triggerring language that could cause a "trauma flair".
I'm also a gardener and a hiker so you will see plenty of nature photos in my on-line school : )
You don't have to take trainings, get certifications and chant in Sanscrit in order to benefit from a personal practice inspired by these traditions. As Eddie Stern said in his book, One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How it Can Transform Your Life.
"Even a little bit of practice can make a difference."
One simple thing: a personal Yoga practice can help you learn how to relax your body, soothe your nerves and quiet your mind so that you can experience clarity about your health, your relationships, your lifes' purpose, and what to do next.
It's the ultimate in self efficacy and does not depend on what anyone else does or thinks. It's for YOU, and it's about YOU!
In this course you will learn three short Yoga lessons that can be practiced individually, or combined for a longer personal practice.
- Opening - including intention setting and the Yoga Complete Breath (5 minutes)
- A gentle posture flow suitable for any constitution. (15 minutes). And tips for other posture practices tailored to your constitution and symptoms.
- Savasana - body scan for relaxation. (15 minutes)
Each of these three lessons will include detailed instructions on how to practice as well as brief introductions to context, or the reasons why to practice including history and philosophy.
Frequently asked questions
- Will I need a Yoga mat? No, Each of the practices included in my courses can be done sitting in a chair, sittting on the floor, or lying on your bed or the floor unless otherwise noted.
- Will I have to get down on the floor? No, you'll be able to practice while sitting in a chair, or lying on your bed unless otherwise noted.
- What if I am not flexible? Doesn't matter.
- What if it "doesn't work"? Sometimes, for some people living with the effects of trauma, even closing the eyes than can be scarey. This does not mean you are doing it wrong or that you can't do it. It means you need to keep your eyes open, or you need a different practice. It's the practicing regularly that will make a difference.
